The Crucible’s version of My Fair Lady has been receiving a rapturous reception with standing ovations night after night, writes Julia Armstrong.

The Lerner and Loewe musical comedy is full of songs - Wouldn’t It Be Loverly, With a Little Bit of Luck and I Could Have Danced All Night.

The story is of Covent Garden flower girl Eliza Doolittle, played by Carly Bawden, who manages to fool Edwardian high society that she is a princess after intensive coaching from linguistics expert Professor Henry Higgins - played by Sheffield’s own Dominic West.

The much-loved 1964 film starred Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison. And the Crucible version, directed by Sheffield Theatres artistic director Daniel Evans, can easily bear the comparison.

Bawden’s acting talent and comic timing match her beautiful voice. West fits perfectly into his role of the eccentric academic, and he and Anthony Calf, playing his friend Colonel Pickering, really bounce off one another with some funny scenes.

Richenda Carey has a great supporting role as Higgins’ posh mum, and Martyn Ellis is entertaining as Eliza’s ne’er-do-well dad.

Designer Paul Wells’ versatile revolving set helps to keep the action moving along splendidly.

The entire evening is quite simply loverly!
