VIDEO: Philippa fans pledge £14k for Sheffield album

Waiting for Video...

SHEFFIELD songbird Philippa Hanna today sung the praises of Star readers after her call for help to make an album raised over £14,000, writes Graham Walker.

That’s how much fans have pledged in just two months - in return for unique opportunities, like the chance to sing on the recording.

The 28-year-old wowed arena audiences and made thousands of new fans when she supported Lionel Richie on his recent UK tour.

So the guitar girl asked for help to hit the big time and pledge cash support to complete and promote her forthcoming album, Through The Woods.

She needed an extra £10,000.

But unless the target was raised by a specific deadline, as part of a creative arts funding scheme at kickstarter.com, pledges didn’t have to be honoured.

Philippa, of Handsworth, had 97 backers and around £4,000 but only days to make her dream come true when The Star told her story.

Now she’s ended up with a total of 314 fans backing her with a total of £14,331

They’ve given from as little as £10 each, for a signed copy of her soon to be released album, up to four pledges of £1,000, in return to write a song with her.

Three people pledged £100 each to join a choir of voices and actually sing on the album.

Donations will help to complete the recording and promote it with radio, touring and advertising.

She said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have smashed through our target with time to spare.

“I couldn’t have done it without the amazing level of local support from fans in Sheffield. I’m especially grateful to The Star, who have been behind me on my musical journey.

“I’d like to extend a huge ‘thank you’ to all the readers who have supported me, both in pledging towards the new album, in coming to gigs, singing along and making me feel so loved by my home city.”

Her album, a collaboration with the city’s Grammy award winner Eliot Kennedy, is now scheduled for release on April 8.

An exclusive Listening Party, to hear the album first, will be held at the Steelworks Studios, on March 27.
