ONE of the rising stars of contemporary folk music, Jackie Oates, teams up with one of the established names, accordionist Karen Tweed, at The Shakespeare, on Friday for a concert as part of a series of events celebrating the work of Freeman College..

Since making the final of the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards 2003, the singer and fiddle player hailing from Staffordshire has performed extensively at festivals and folk clubs across the country, in a solo capacity and with a number of bands.

She was a founder member of Northumbrian group and Mercury nominated Rachel Unthank and the Winterset until early 2007.

In 2010 Oates became a permanent member of the all-star fusion band Imagined Village along side Eliza Carthy, Chris Wood, Simon Emmerson, Martin Carthy and last year released her fourth studio album, Saturnine.

Norfolk-based Tweed has played in the Kathryn Tickell Band and her many collaborations include the Anglo-Swedish quartet, SWAP, her duet with guitarist Ian Carr with whom she also plays in the Two Duos Quartet (with Andy Cutting and Chris Wood).

She is currently focusing on her one woman solo show, developing her compositional skills, teaching - and playing at pensioners nursing homes, which she loves.
