PERVERSELY writer-performer Michael Pinchbeck has followed his piece The End with The Beginning. Being presented at the Lantern Theatre on Friday, The Beginning is the second in a trilogy deconstructing Shakespearean stage directions.

The End, seen at the Nether Edge theatre last year, was inspired by the stage direction from The Winter’s Tale, “Exit pursued by a bear,” and explored endings and exits and asked why we perform and how we will know when to stop.

This time A Midsummer Night’s Dream, is the starting point. The Beginning takes place between a rehearsal and a performance, dreaming and being awake, and asks how we might begin a career, a relationship or a life.

The award-winning artist based in Nottingham is joined by Nicki Hobday and Ollie Smith to remember how it feels to perform for the very first time.

The show was developed at Lakeside Arts Centre in Nottingham where Pinchbeck is based with support from Leeds Met Studio Theatre, Loughborough University and The Junction at Cambridge.

Pinchbeck has a long career in theatre, he was commissioned by Nottingham Playhouse to write The White Album following the structure of The Beatles’ LP and in 2011 The Ashes about the MCC’s infamous Bodyline cricket tour to Australia in 1932/33. He was recently awarded a bursary by Theatre Writing Partnership to travel to Paris and Sarajevo to research a new play - Bolero.

In 2008, Michael was selected by Arts Council England to represent the UK at the Biennale for Young Artists in Italy.

In 2009 and 2011, his work was selected for the British Council’s prestigious Edinburgh Showcase The show is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and commissioned by the World Event Young Artists 2012.

The Beginning is at the Lantern Theatre on Saturday. Tickets are £12
