Seeing double in Cousin John at Broomhill Festival

PETER Ryder plays John the Baptist in the Broomhill Festival's revival of John Earwaker's 1999 musical Cousin John at the Montgomery Theatre next week.

It is unlikely he will be confused dramatically with the person playing his cousin, Jesus, although it is possible if you are not concentrating as it is James Ryder, Peter's twin brother.

Salome, the eventual cause of John's demise not named in the four Gospel accounts but christened thus by the Jewish historian Josephus, is played by a very talented young lady by all accounts, Molly-Mae Whawell.

Gary Grief, somewhat appropriately named, is Herod and his wife Herodias, the subject of John's scorn, is played by Anne Paget.

Unlike nine years ago when the musically impressive work was first performed, it will not look like a Sunday School outing as the revival producer Valerie Monti Holland, an American living in Nether Edge, has set it in the present-day Middle East which could work extremely well.

Andy Thomas, music director at St Mark's Church, Broomhill conducts the performance, John Earwaker's scoring been for wind instruments and string quintet.

There are two outings for the staging, on Tuesday and Wednesday, both starting at 7.30pm.
