Long-distance laugh
THERE'S a spirit of wanderlust around Sheffield comedy outfit Abbcom at the moment. Promoter Lev Stern is heading off to China "to seek inspiration and look at some business opportunities that may or may not involve comedy," he says.
The Londoner is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, having lived there previously running a magazine in Beijing, managing the world's most inland bar and setting up an art dealership. "I'm out there for a month and hope to come back refreshed and full of ideas and energy to get our new Steel City Comedy gig at Walkley Community Centre in July off to a running start," said the 39-year-old.
He will be missing Abbcom's Big Night Out (Part III) on Saturday when someone else will be off on their travels.
Sheffield comedian Matt Turner will be performing his last gig on home soil before emigrating to Canada.
"I'm hoping to continue my Ross Kemp-based comedy across the Pond," said the dead ringer for the former EastEnders star.
Abbcom's Big Night Out (Part III) takes place at Bar Abbey and is headlined by comedy circuit stalwart Gary Delaney introduced by comperes Simon Gunnell and Gareth Urwin.
