Musical farewell for veteran drummer
FRIENDS are being invited to bring along their instruments to say a rousing musical farewell to a veteran Sheffield drummer.
Lady's Bridge bard Richard Hawley is expected to be among the musicians responding to the call to celebrate the life of Roger Harrison who died at home last week following a long illness. A jam will take place at Woodlands Club, Rotherham, after a funeral service at the town's Herringthorpe Crematorium where music will also play a big part.
Roger, a well-known member of pub and club bands over four decades, was in New Jersey Turnpike who were famed for a memorable version of Queen's classic Bohemian Rhapsody which will be heard again at Herringthorpe, while former bandmate Bob Campbell performs an acoustic number.
Harmony vocalist and occasional lead singer Roger's own recording of I Shall Be Released will be played along with Mickey Newbury and Jerry Lee Lewis tracks, and his widow, Isobel, will offer a eulogy.
An open-air stage will be available at Woodlands Club, opposite Clifton Park, and onetime Frank White bassist Mal Hooley, one of the pall-bearers, said: "Anyone who wants to have a strum should bring their guitar. We're aiming to turn this into a megabash."
The Herringthorpe service will be held at 2.20pm on Monday. Roger, who was 65 and lived at Dinnington, had played with Frank White, Chuck Fowler and Dave Berry, and his other bands included The Cherokees, The Daizies, The News, Skittles and Flexible Friends.
