LAURA Davis’ giant cupcakes were a big hit with friends and family. Now others can indulge their sweet tooth too, following the opening of her new shop at Hillsborough Barracks.
Shakes ‘n’ Cakes is the idea of Laura and her partner Stuart Stones.
“I started out by making cakes for my niece and for Stuart to take to work and share with his colleagues. Then one day we came up with the idea of opening a shop of our own,” she says.
They specialise in home-made cakes and milkshakes made with ice cream from Joe’s Ices of Beighton, just up the road from their Killamarsh home. Laura was deputy manager at a local care home until branching out on her own. Stuart currently works as a computer analyst – but they are hoping to make the new venture a full time job.
“I’m the baker and Stuart is the chief taster!” says Laura.
A self-taught cook, her inspiration came from her granddad: “When I was little he made me a cake in the design of a house, decorated with sweets. It took him hours but it was brilliant and it started me off baking too.”
Laura now bakes each morning at the Hillsborough store. Her customers’ favourites include giant cupcakes, doughnuts and cookies, which are all made to order. She is also happy to fulfil special requests for flavours and fillings.
On Friday, May 20, the shop is holding a Great Bake Day to help raise awareness and funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Features will include a ‘guess the weight of the cake’ competition and for every cake purchased, 25p will go to charity.
