New plan for garage site

FORMER Sheffield garage buildings could be converted into homes, retail units and a restaurant under new plans.

Car dealer Gilder's, which still owns the site at Banner Cross, came up with the proposals after Sheffield Council rejected plans for a supermarket and housing.

The proposals were presented to a meeting of Banner Cross Neighbourhood Group by Gilder chief executive Garry Scotting.

Residents said they would like a roundabout to replace traffic lights at the junction of Psalter Lane and Ecclesall Road. Mr Scotting replied the development would not raise enough to cover the 1.5 million cost of the roundabout but residents said they would ask the council to provide the funding.

Viv Lockwood, honorary secretary of the BCNG, said "What Banner Cross desperately needs is a focal point for the community.

"A roundabout would not only help the traffic flow but would act as a distinguishing feature, rather like Hunters Bar."

Mr Scotting said Gilder's were no longer pursuing the idea of an appeal to the Government after the rejection of the original application last August.

He said: "We looked at it from a practical point of view and we have solid buildings on the site. Why don't we make use of them?"

A scheme was now being further worked up.

Mr Scotting said: "We are very serious about it. We think it's workable."

He said he was very encouraged by the positive reaction of the community representatives.
