NEWS IN BRIEF: Church thanksgiving memorial to doctor

FAMILY and friends filled St John's Church, Ranmoor, in memory of Dr Colin Shawcross, who was killed in his home in Aston last January.

The doctor's family organised the thanksgiving memorial last Saturday, with donations to the Rugby Football Union Injured Players Foundation.

Dr Shawcross, aged 58, who used to live in Ranmoor, spent 30 years as a GP in Firth Park before working in the endoscopy unit at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

He went missing in January and his remains were found in woods near Harthill five months later. Andrew Hill, aged 48, of Woodall, near Rotherham, is remanded in custody charged with murder.

Pitching in for Luke

FRIENDS and former teachers of Sheffield teenager Luke Mosley, who died in a car crash last month, will today play a football match in his memory.

His former football team The Legendary Dream Team will play staff from City School at Handsworth Junior Sporting Club. The 2.50 admission will go towards a memorial bench at the school. There will also be a prize draw. Luke, aged 18, suffered fatal injuries in the crash on the B6200 Retford Road in Handsworth when the Citroen Saxo he was driving hit a road sign.

Sister Tracy Cockshott said: "Luke was such a well-liked person everyone wanted to do something to remember him by."

Parents' Assembly launch

A PARENTS' Assembly was launched in Sheffield this week to help shape services for children over the next two years.

Around 200 parents are working with the council to help drive up aspirations and attainment levels. Initial plans are to hold four assemblies a year, giving members a chance to speak directly to heads and leaders of services.

Coun Andrew Sangar, cabinet member for children's services and lifelong learning, said: "All too often we hear parents telling us they feel they are the last to know what changes are afoot in terms of education or services for young people. This way they will be able to directly challenge leaders in education before changes are made."

Sports Personality tickets

TICKETS went on sale on Tuesday for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year at the Sheffield Arena on Sunday, December 13. They cost 35 excluding booking fee.

For the fourth time in its 56-year history the show is taking place outside London. With an expected attendance of 11,000, it will be live on air from 7pm to 9pm, presented by Sue Barker, Gary Lineker and Jake Humphrey.

Turning on the lights

THE Christmas illuminations in Sheffield city centre will be switched on during the afternoon of Sunday, November 22.

Pantomime characters from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and musical acts will join the party, hosted by Real Radio in partnership with the council.

Activities will be held on The Moor from 3pm, then a celebrity guest and Father Christmas will perform the switch-on for the main ceremony in Barkers Pool at 5pm.

2,000 for injured soldiers

THE Stannington and District Branch of the Royal British Legion has given 2,000 to Selly Oak Hospital's Alexandra Wing, where most soldiers injured in Afghanistan are being given specialist care.

Representatives who went to Birmingham also handed over hundreds of pounds worth of toiletries, books and other items to help soldiers in their recovery.

The money came from a variety of fundraising exercises, including a raffle at this year's Stannington Carnival, bucket collections at supermarkets and donations from local businesses.
