Newsagent's discovers its centenary

A SHOP at Hillsborough is not only selling the news, it is making it.

For Alan Crookes, owner of Corner News for three years, has discovered that the shop is 100 years old. He knew the shop at the corner of Middlewood Road and Dykes Hall Road had a long history and customers had talked about it being a newsagent's for a long time.

But it was only when a customer went to the library to research its history that Alan, who runs the shop with wife Pam and son-in-law Kevin, found out the surprising news that the centenary is this year.

The premises were a butcher's until 1908, then the use was unknown until a newsagent's opened in 1910.

Despite the recession, Alan says: "We're plodding on. I think everybody is in the same boat in Hillsborough. But a few shops have reopened. It's a nice little shopping centre."
