The installation of South Yorkshire’s second Police and Crime Commissioner this week serves as a reminder about how the role of law enforcement and relationship with the public has changed over the years.

This is an undated photograph from the archives, but certainly from the era of Dixon of Dock Green rather than 24 Hours in Police Custody, showing Sheffield boys in blue lining up for roll-call in Castle Green before setting off to pound the streets.

The flags adorning the Hen & Chickens pub suggests it might be some kind of public holiday.

Because of its proximity to the law courts the Hen & Chickens was often frequented by some of the city’s shadier characters but was also popular with those on the other side of the thin blue line.
