Memories of May Queen celebrations are alive and kicking in Sheffield as we celebrate the May Day bank holiday today.
Most family albums contain sepia or black and white images of the day their favourite girl was crowned to mark one of the most popular holidays of the year.
They were dressed in white and lace then given a crown of colourful flowers.
They were often named after a flower of their choice ranging from hyacinth and rose to lilac and lily of the valley.
The boys were also included and often their outfits were no less smart as they took on the role of attendants during the crowning ceremony.
