As Nick Clegg prepares for a battle to hold on to his Sheffield Hallam constituencey here’s one of Sheffield’s first glimpses of him as the MEP for the East Midlands lining up with entrepreneur and chair of Yorkshire and Humberside in Europe Julia Gash and MPs Richard Allan and Helen Jackson at the launch of Sheffield in Europe at the Town Hall.

Was he aware then that he would be taking over the seat captured for the Lib Dems by Allan in 1997? It was the following year that the now Baron Allan of Hallam announced he would be stepping down and the search began for a successor.

Clegg was chosen from a shortlist of four candidates to contest the seat , none of whom had any previous local connections, it was noted at the time, unlike his predecessor and the other five sitting MPs, Labour’s Clive Betts, David Blunkett, Richard Caborn, Helen Jackson and Meg Munn.
