A PETITION with more than 5,000 names is opposing proposed cuts to services at BBC Radio Sheffield.

Signed by people from many faith and ethnic backgrounds, it is concerned that programmes will be lost that appeal to different communities and bring communities together to help prevent the type of tensions that resulted in riots in other parts of the country.

The petition was presented by Haji Mohammed Nazir, chairman of the Pakistan Friends League Sheffield, to Sheffield Central Labour MP Paul Blomfield in response to public consultation by the BBC Trust.

It also raise concerns about the sharing of programmes with other regions.
