Queen's Medal for human trafficking
THE head of the UK Human Trafficking Centre, based in Sheffield, is awarded the Queen's Police Medal for services to policing.
Det Chief Supt Nick Kinsella is chief executive of the Europe's first dedicated unit for victims of people trafficking, mainly women brought in from abroad and forced into prostitution. It is run by the Association of Chief Police Officers.
He described the award as "a great honour".
The former teacher has nearly 29 years' policing experience, mainly in CID.
He was director of intelligence at South Yorkshire Police and also led the review of intelligence management within Special Branch following the Omagh bombing in Northern Ireland.
He was an assistant director at the National Criminal Intelligence Service, which is responsible for tackling organised immigration crime nationally and internationally.
Brightside MP and former minister David Blunkett spoke of his delight of a CBE being awarded to his friend and former Star reporter Paul Potts, who is now executive chairman of national news agency the Press Association. The honour was for services to journalism.
Mr Blunkett said: "Paul was a cub reporter on The Star when I first got on to the city council in 1970 and we have kept in touch over the years. It's nice to have someone who came up through local newspapers recognised."
Mr Potts, aged 58, is a former deputy editor of the Daily Express.
Two retired Army recruitment officers who used to work in Sheffield are both recognised in the New Year Honours.
Former Sgt Shane Jones, aged 40, of Bramley, Rotherham, receives an MBE, and Roger Williams, 55, a retired Warrant Officer, of Sharrow, is awarded a Meritorious Service Medal.
The pair helped hundreds of young people in South Yorkshire join up and have also raised thousands of pounds for charity, including South Yorkshire Air Ambulance, hospices in Barnsley and Doncaster, the Sheffield cardiac unit and Children's Hospital.
Sheffield's area recruiting officer Major Keith Tomlinson said: "This is fantastic news for Shane and Roger – they thoroughly deserve it."
