RAPIST DAD: Timeline of horrors
TIMELINE
1970s:
- Physical abuse begins and progresses into indecent assaults and then rapes by the time the children are 11.
- Social services in Sheffield have contact with the family between 1976 and 1979.
1980s:
- Younger daughter breaks her arm when her father throws her across a room for rejecting his sexual advances.
- In 1988 suspicions are raised at the girls' school about injuries, but they are put down to bullying.
- The first child from the rapes is born.
1990s:
- The rapist's wife - the mother of his two victims - leaves him and their children.
- Daughters begin to confide in each other.
- The daughters are in and out of hospital giving birth to children, having terminations, miscarriages and genetic counselling.
- In 1993 doctors warn one of the daughters of the danger of having any more children with the same man because of the number with medical conditions.
- Younger daughter rings Childline in 1998 to ask if she and her sister would have their children taken off them if they reported their father. When they are told they can be given no guarantee they hang up.
- In 1997 Lincolnshire Police launches an investigation into reported sex abuse in the family when a relative makes an allegation. The daughters will not co-operate.
2000s:
- Social services departments in South Yorkshire and Lincolnshire begin liaising when the family moves back to Sheffield.
- The father is arrested in 2008 after social workers alert the police when the younger daughter admits the abuse.
- The mother is investigated in 2008 on suspicion of child cruelty but is not charged.
