Seb Coe back home – to inspire others

SEB Coe is coming home… for one day only.

Sheffield's former Olympic gold medallist and world record holder is to visit his home city next Tuesday and will also spend time at his former school, Tapton.

Coe, now chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, will meet athletes and schoolchildren who have been inspired by the London 2012 Games.

Among the athletes will be Sheffield's current golden girl Jessica Ennis – it was Coe who presented Jessica with her gold medal after she became the first Briton to win an heptathlon title at the World Championships in Berlin.

The two will meet again at the English Institute of Sport where Coe will unveil a 'Wall of Fame'.

Young sports enthusiasts from Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster and from the Sheffield Academy of Young Leaders in Sport will also get the chance to meet and greet the legendary Olympian.

His visit to Tapton will be followed by a trip to Ponds Forge where he will watch youngsters from Barnsley and the London Borough of Newham take part in an enterprise challenge – a new component of Get set, London's 2012's education programme.

Finally Coe will meet representatives of the Serbian National Olympic Committee, which has chosen Sheffield for its pre-Games training camp, before a display of diving from young British talent. He will also hear about technological innovations which are helping to improve diving techniques, developed by Sheffield Hallam university.

The visit has been organised by LOCOG and Yorkshire Gold.
