South Yorkshire's primary school league tables

SHEFFIELD'S primary pupils may not be celebrating the greatest ever set of results - but plenty of schools still have cause for celebration.

Broomhall's Springfield School did far better than the experts were predicting - the combined English and maths pass rates were up to 61 per cent, eight per cent higher than expected and a whopping 26 per cent up on 2008.

Headteacher Beth Stevenson said: "We're so pleased with the results. This is exactly the direction we want to be heading as a school and I hope this achievement will inspire our current Y6 pupils to do even better." Across the city maths scores rose by two per cent, English fell by one per cent while science pass rates were unchanged.

The top performing school in Sheffield is Stocksbridge Juniors - and it had double cause to celebrate after being named one of the top 200 schools in the country.

Last year's top rated school St Wilfrid's RC in Millhouses dipped to second this time - but it too was in the top 200 nationally when it came to the number of children achieving outstanding Level 5 passes. Three Sheffield schools are among the most improved 200 primaries in the country - Hatfield, Wisewood and Netherthorpe. Rotherham schools Wales and Aughton achieved the same feat. But it was not all good news.

Four Sheffield primary schools found themselves in the bottom 200 nationally - Arbourthorne, Watercliffe Meadow, Mansel and Greenlands. Three other schools have some of the most serious problems with the persistent absence of pupils - Phillimore Park, Byron Wood and Valley Park.
