Split-second decision a matter of life and death - VIDEO

ARMED police in South Yorkshire outlined the dangers posed by weapons at an event in Sheffield Town Hall.

The Guns And Knives Take Lives presentation warned that, though gun crime may dominate the headlines, it is knife crime that remains a more widespread problem.

The event, organised by the South Yorkshire Armed Response Unit and Sheffield Council, also warned that police who carry weapons are under enormous pressure.

Pc Matt Birch said: "Statistically, a firearms officer who attends an event has 0.7 seconds to decide whether to shoot someone."

In the past four years officers from the unit have given up their time to educate young people aged 13 to 15 and this year they visited 70 of the 75 schools in South Yorkshire, reaching 21,000 pupils.

Inspector Paul McCurry said: "This event was designed so practitioners could see what we deliver in schools, and put this across to other young people."
