Students' DVD launch at Longley Park College VIDEO

"Don't do it. Don't joyride," is the message from students at Longley Park Sixth Form College.

Students, teachers, parents, police, paramedics, representatives from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service, as well as Sheffield artist Joe Scarborough and the Lord Mayor Coun Jane Bird, walked the red carpet at the college yesterday for the premier of Joyride.

The film, showing the dangers of joyriding, which has been shot by a group of sixth formers at Longley Park, was commissioned by South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield Futures.

It took the group of student seven months to film the 10-minute DVD, on a budget of just under 1,000

The finished DVD will be sent out to Sheffield secondaries, all the nation's police forces, as well as youth workers, probation services and crime prevention teams.

For the launch, at Longley Park College, police, paramedics and the Fire and Rescue service told students gripping stories of accidents they have attended.

"You remember the people you dealt with, you remember little bits and pieces about the families. You remember it as it was yesterday," said traffic officer pc Stephen Thomas.

The sixth formers showed that work with the film had been a great lesson.

"Don't do it. Don't joyride. Watch the film and don't joyride," said Kieran Ward, one of the students involved in making the video.

School mate Will Baker, also involved in the making of the DVD, continued:

"Think of the consequences. As the video shows it's the knock on effect that's really bad. And the way it affects others further down the line.

"I mean, it's gonna affect people's families, someone's gonna be devastated 'cause they had their car stolen. Basically, just think of everyone else. And think of it in the long term 'cause you're gonna go to jail," said Will Baker.

Students at Longley Park Sixth Form College yesterday also gave a preview of their Creative show. Read more: College showcase student work
