Students following the yellow brick road

STUDENTS of High Storrs School take to the stage of the City Hall for the first time this Friday as they perform The Wiz in the main Oval Hall as part of Sheffield's Children's Festival.

Their productions are usually held in the Crucible, which is currently being refurbished.

An audience of more than 1,000 people is expected at the City Hall to see High Storrs' take on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

"They are taking it in their stride," said director Lindsey Broughton. "We are a performing arts specialist school and this is almost second nature to them. There is a long history of large performances at the Children's Festival, usually at the Crucible."

The cast includes Emma Kelly as Dorothy, Chaila Chisabingo as the Scarecrow, Sam Whitfield as the Tin Man, Jack Mosedale as the Lion, Lauren Wright at Addapearle and Vicky Sharples as Evellene. Producer is Claire Pender, choreographer, Moyra Lee, musical director, Jonathan Curley and Rachel Booyens is responsible for the set and costumes.

Coincidentally, the school's programme for The Wiz refers to the person who played the Scarecrow in the film version. It was Michael Jackson.

To promote the show, four students have turned their hand to promotion management. Calling themselves The Biz, they have taken on all aspects of marketing, press and pr for the production.

Claire Pender, Director of Specialisms at High Storrs, said: "A school production of this scale has given our students an amazing opportunity, not only to perform but also to experience marketing, publicity, ticket sales, and front-of-house duties on a professional level.

"The Biz team have risen to the challenge and have worked together to fully support our production, which promises to be a huge success and a great accolade for High Storrs."

The show starts at 7:30pm . Tickets cost 6 (5 concessions) and are available from the City Hall box office on 2789789.
