Taking the grief out of going green…
EARTHMINE, a new Sheffield consultancy, say they "take the grief out of going green".
Set up by former engineer Jo Crawshaw, the company aims to help people reduce energy and carbon dioxide emissions from their own home or company buildings by offering help and advice on grants and the changing technologies available.
After several years working in Zaire, Cameroon, Liberia and Tajikistan on water supply projects, Jo became aware of the effect climate change was having around the world – crop failures in Tajikistan and water shortages in Zaire, for example.
"In Zaire some people had to sell part of their roof to buy food. For these people already living a precarious hand-to-mouth existence, changes in weather patterns were having a devastating effect.
"I returned to the UK convinced that the way we live here has a direct effect on the lives of the people I had met in those far off countries and that our comfort shouldn't be at their expense."

lSheffield Community Renewables are searching for suitable sites for the city's first weir-powered micro power station – Kelham is now a possibility, it seems.
