Tesco store plans spark new battle

TESCO has submitted revised plans for a Tesco Express at Commonside – and run straight into opposition from local councillors.

The supermarket giant has changed the design and presented a new traffic impact study in an attempt to secure permission for the development on the site of the former Hollies petrol station at the junction of Commonside and Springvale Road.

Its previous application was rejected by the council one-and-a-half years ago after widespread opposition.

Now fresh protests have emerged immediately from Liberal Democrat councillors from Walkley, Broomhill and Crookes in response to the latest scheme.

Council leader and Broomhill councillor Paul Scriven said: "Local people can be forgiven if they feel a sense of dj vu when they hear this news. No doubt they will be extremely concerned. However, I would like to assure them that local Lib Dem councillors will be fighting against this proposal just as we did last time."

They maintain that, despite the alterations, the store would generate extra traffic on an already hazardous junction, create parking problems and noise for local residents and undermine existing traders.

Coun Scriven said: "Clearly a new Tesco on this site would have a negative effect for local residents and it could spell the end for many local independent businesses, particularly in the present economic climate. However, we have defeated this application before and I'm sure that, with the help of local people, we can do it again."

Tesco says the store would offer "an important day-to-day convenience retail facility" for nearby residents in a development that would improve the Crookesmoor shopping centre.

The design has been "dramatically amended" to take into account the adjacent Birkendale Conservation Area and a parking survey submitted in an attempt to demonstrate that there would be no traffic disruption. Council officers will investigate all the implications before preparing a report for councillors.
