Tinnitus research conference next week in Sheffield

A PRESTIGIOUS prize for tinnitus research will be presented at its annual conference next week in Sheffield.

Dr Peyman Adjamian has won the 2010 Marie and Jack Shapiro Prize, an annual award made by the British Tinnitus Association.

Dr Adjamian, an investigator scientist at the MRC Institute of Hearing at the University of Nottingham, will also receive a 250 cheque at Sheffield Hallam University on September 9.

His winning paper was called The Mechanisms Of Tinnitus: Perspectives From Human Functional Neuroimaging, and was co-written by Prof Deb Hall and Dr Magdalena Sereda.

Five research papers were short-listed for the prize, which recognises the piece of published research by a UK-based author most likely to result in improved treatment or public awareness of tinnitus.

The award is named after late BTA founder Jack Shapiro, who passed away earlier this year, and his wife Marie. It encourages researchers, public communicators and others to develop an interest in the condition.

David Stockdale, chief executive of the BTA, said: "Jack Shapiro founded the BTA and is therefore a very important person in the charity's history.

"He worked tirelessly, until his early nineties, helping raise awareness of tinnitus and helping those who experience it."

The BTA conference will include presentations about the latest global developments in treatments, theories and research related to tinnitus.

For the first time, an inaugural Jack Shapiro Memorial Lecture will be added to the programme.

Tinnitus is a term that describes the sensation of hearing a noise in the absence of an external sound. The noise can have virtually any quality, as ringing, whistling and buzzing are common, but more complex sounds may also be reported.

Conference tickets cost 50 for BTA members and 90 for non-members, with lunch and all refreshments included. For tickets call Krys Klytta at the BTA office on 0114 250 9933 or email krys@tinnitus.org.uk.

The BTA is an independent charity that supports thousands of people who experience tinnitus and advises medical professionals from across the world. For more information visit www.tinnitus.org.uk.
