Tons of seized fake clothing sent overseas

TONS of fake branded clothing will be shipped to poor people overseas after a massive donation by Sheffield's Trading Standards team.

Thousands of pairs of fake trainers branded Nike, Adidas and other makes, along with hundreds of items of trendy but counterfeit clothing including sweatshirts and jackets were handed over.

The gift - to charity His Church - was so big it filled a 17-ton truck. It will be taken to Huntingdon where the goods will have their branding changed or removed and then sent overseas and put to good use.

Phil Glaves, of Sheffield Trading Standards, said the booty was seized in three big raids and numerous smaller ones over the last few years.

Associated court cases had concluded and court orders had been issued allowing the disposal of the items, he added.

He said: "We obtained the items from raids on factories, homes and warehouses and it would have been sold at car boot sales, on ebay and in local pubs. It's good to see it being put to good use."

Coun Shaffaq Hussain, cabinet member for climate change and local environment said: "it would be wasteful to dispose of these illegal goods through landfill or incineration. This charity has distribution links to ensure the goods get to people who need them and will appreciate them."
