Tributes to student who died after being hit by taxi

THE University of Sheffield paid tribute this week to a student who died after being hit by a taxi as she returned home late at night after studying in the library.

Ka Yi Wu, aged 19, who was in her second year of a BA in business studies, was described as "a bright and talented student who will be missed terribly by those who taught her in the Management School".

Known to friends as Joyce, she suffered head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene after the collision with the taxi in Manchester Road, Broomhill, two minutes after midnighton Saturday.

She had just got off a bus near the junction with Tapton House Road, where she lived.

The student had spent the evening in the Information Commons at Brook Hill, leaving just before 11.45pm.

Bunches of flowers were later tied to a lamppost and candles lit at the scene of the incident.

Ka Yi was originally from China but had lived in the UK for several years, having completed her A-levels at Lincoln College.

Debora Green, assistant director in student services at the University of Sheffield, said:

"We are deeply saddened to hear the news of the tragic death of Ka Yi Wu and offer our deepest condolences to her family and friends. The University has offered support to her housemates during this difficult time and we will also be extending our support to the family and any staff or students who have been affected."

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision, which involved a maroon London-style taxi.

A taxi driver, aged 55, has been arrested and bailed pending further inquiries.
