City College bakery students with workshop leader Chris North
Knead to know basis
Sheffield College bakery students discovered the art of classic French bread making during a half-day specialist workshop.
The class was led by former tutor Chris North, who has spent the last three years on a research tour of France, speaking to local bakers and collecting recipes for a book.
Chris said: “The purpose of this workshop was to broaden students’ bakery skills and recapture the art of classic bread making.”
Breads included le tricorne, la couronne, l’Auvergnat, as well as baguettes and pain Parisienne. The college is hosting an open evening on Monday, March 18, 6-8pm.
Oasis meal deal

Centre director Darren Pearce said: “We’ve had some fantastic additions to our line-up of eateries over the past year and we wanted to give shoppers a chance to sample what we now have on offer.”
The Oasis dining quarter recently underwent a £7 million refurbishment.
Closed Shop reopens
The Closed Shop pub at Walkley was due to reopen last night, under new management.
The Commonside pub had been closed for months, but has now been taken over by the team behind the popular Rutland Arms in Brown Street. Plans for a complete refurbishment, including installation of a kitchen, are in the pipeline – expect food after Easter.
Meanwhile the pub will specialise in real cider and real ales, mainly from local breweries, including Blue Bee which had its roots at the Rutland. The first batch includes Enville Ginger, Saltaire Blonde, Tangled Up IPA, Old Moor Porter and Leeds Pale.
