BRIGHT FUTURE AHEAD

Specialist chef Jon Tite will be flying the flag for Sheffield in the Vegetarian Society’s Chef of the Future 2013 competition in Altrincham next week.

Jon (pictured below), sous chef at the Showroom Café, is one of four finalists in the national contest. He said: “Getting to the final was an amazing surprise… but I think I’m in with a good chance.”

Sheffield diners can taste his winning style at the Showroom’s next gourmet vegan evening on Saturday. Highlights include carrot and cardamom savarin, truffle and artichoke cannelloni, and tofu chocolate mousse; tickets £25.

ETEN SET TO OPEN

New city-centre café Eten is due to open on Tuesday. The team of chefs, headed by Lee Vintin, will be serving brunch, lunch and take-away snacks from 7.30am at the York Street side of the building. An East Parade dining area and first floor function room will follow.

A PIECE OF CAKE

Sheffield foodie Ros Arksey is joining forces with local bakers to stage a Cake Break in aid of the MS Society at Tamper Coffee in Westfield Terrace. Donations have come from city bakeries including Cat Lane, Honeypie, Forge Bakehouse, Tipple Tales and Hash Brownies. Ros and husband Adrian will be selling cakes from 10am-3pm on Sunday.

TASTE OF THE SEA

Fish Friday is back at the Devonshire Arms, Middle Handley – but don’t expect cod and chips. The gourmet evening, on May 10, is being run in partnership with fishmonger JH Mann and aims to tempt diners to extend their knowledge and taste for seafood.

COUNTRY LIVING

Platillos serves up a Delicioso feast in Leopold Square next Thursday. The five-course meal features food of the Basque Country including trio of salt cod, beetroot salad, stuffed squid, tolosa stew, and almond custard torte – all with complimentary wines or cocktails. Tickets £40.
