Nonnas has even more to celebrate in its 20th birthday year – after team member Lucia Gadau was crowned the Best Barista in England.

Sardinian-born Lucia, who joined the Ecclesall Road bar and restaurant in 2013, beat thousands nationwide to take the title.

Proprietor Maurizio Mori was delighted: “I’m confident of saying we are now serving the very best coffee anywhere in the country. It’s a huge accolade for us.”

Lucia began learning her craft as a teenager, more than 20 years ago. And such is her attention to detail that making the perfect cup of coffee starts from the moment she wakes up: “The temperature and humidity outside can have a dramatic effect on the end result,” she says. “I believe in absolute perfection… so many baristas cut corners and serve poor coffee.”

It takes years to learn how to use the correct pressure and milk consistency and how to handle the coffee.

Lucia was presented with her honour at the English Italian Awards celebration in Manchester.

THE TOAST OF SHEFFIELD

Rafters co-owner Alistair Myers is toasting success after becoming the first in Sheffield to be certified by the prestigious Court of Master Sommeliers. He said: “It’s been a lot of hard work but satisfying to know we can offer our customers expert knowledge and advice about wine.” Rafters is also the only city restaurant to win a place in the 2017 Good Food Guide.
