Vote now to win cash aid for fragile moorland

A SHEFFIELD beauty spot popular with walkers, fell runners and mountain bikers could win a £25,000 cash injection - if city folk vote for the project in a national competition.

Sheffield Wildlife Trust's Blacka Moor nature reserve has been shortlisted in a competition run by the Live for the Outdoors website.

Roy Mosley, from the trust, said they urgently needed to make improvements to a key bridleway at the nature reserve, just off Hathersage Road on the way to the Peak District.

He said if the trust wins the money staff and volunteers would create a bridleway in character with the reserve, using local stone.

The aim is to prevent erosion and damage to fragile flora in the woodland. Local volunteers could learn footpath construction, ecology and teamwork.

Mr Mosley said: "Blacka Moor Nature Reserve is the perfect escape with spectacular moors and woodland providing a stunning and peaceful setting for experiencing wildlife. It is an internationally important upland in the Peak District National Park with a range of protected species.

"Blacka Moor contributes to our aim of creating a network of green spaces from the high moors of the Peak District to the floodplain of the Lower Don Valley. We are urging anyone who loves the countryside to vote for Sheffield Wildlife Trust."

To vote, log on to www.livefortheoutdoors.com and search for Sheffield Wildlife Trust. Votes close Wed February 10.
