War breaks out to liven up a quiet weekend - PICTURES
TREETON took a step back in time at the weekend when a Civil War battle re-enacment group set up camp in the village.
The renowned Sealed Knot organisation spent two days in the Rotherham village turning back the clocks to the 17th century to depict life from a bygone era.
Members were invited by Treeton Local History Group and over the weekend hundreds of spectators turned up to see what life was like on the battlefields of Britain.
The Sealed Knot members, dressed in traditional clothing from years ago, paraded through the village before re-enacting battles complete with cannons, gunfire and the sound of drums.
Hour-long re-enacments were carried out on both Saturday and Sunday.
The sound of the battle could be heard echoing throughout the village every time cannons were fired.
A living history camp was also set up, where Sealed Knot members demonstrated how people used to live under canvas.
They cooked on open fires, showed how clothes used to be knitted and demonstrated ancient crafts.
Soldiers were also on hand to talk about the weaponry used during the fighting and there were puppet shows and a bouncy castle to entertain the children.
Local History Group chairman Robin Carter, who helped organise the event, died just a few weeks before the summer spectacular was held.
In his honour a one minute's silence was held, which was followed by a round of applause.
There was also a special ale called Robin's Vindication unveiled in his honour in a beer tent set up at Treeton Cricket Club.
A Sealed Knot spokesman said: "Robin wanted to give Treeton something it would not forget – I think he succeeded."
