Work paves way for revamp of Moor

WORK is starting on a £2.9m revamp for the lower section of The Moor.

Part of the shopping precinct opposite Atkinson's department store is to be repaved to a similar standard to Howard Street, the Peace Gardens and Barkers Pool.

Stretching from Cumberland Street to Earl Street, the scheme is designed to link with the proposed markets hall.

Revised plans for a replacement for the Castlegate markets have been approved by the council but a final financial agreement with Moor owners RREEF is still awaited.

Construction could start next year, ending one of the city centre's longest-running development sagas.

As well as a new markets complex, eight new shops are proposed facing the precinct.

Money for the facelift is coming from the Government-backed regional development agency Yorkshire Forward.

Despite the recession, council and business leaders are trying to maintain some momentum in the city centre, especially with the 600m Sevenstone retail quarter.

Andy Topley, director of regeneration at the city development company Creativesheffield, said: "Creativesheffield has been working tirelessly with the city council to progress Sevenstone and to help secure the funding to carry out public realm improvements on The Moor.

"The success of this work is excellent news for the city and proves that our efforts are paying off with our city continuing to move forwards.

"This Yorkshire Forward funding shows their continued support for the city, and is a vital catalyst for the future Moor developments. It will be great to see construction work starting."
