PADDY CONSIDINE and rock music are not instantly synonymous with one another.
Though he has starred in an Arctic Monkeys video, he's more renowned for his roles in The Bourne Ultimatum or as a detective in Hot Fuzz.

But this weekend the actor – whose best role so far came in Shane Meadows' critically-acclaimed Dead Man's Shoes – headlines at Sheffield's Grapes with his band, Riding the Low, whose sound is marked by distorted guitar and occasional vocal harmonies.

The band shares the bill with Sheffield-based electro pop group Green Man Says Go and singer-songwriter Little Lost David.

"I'm so glad to be playing the same night as the detective from Hot Fuzz," laughs Matt from Green Man Says Go, whose edgy electro is fused with spoken word phrases (think The Fall/Art Brut).

"It's easier to say what you want to say when you speak but it can come across as dictatorial. We chose to do it this way half out of choice, and half because we had to – none of us can sing," says Matt.

But that's a good thing. The speaking element to Green Man Says Go distinguishes their sound from the plethora of electro indie groups. "We try to be edgy – we don't want to be another band who you get bored of but then again, you don't want to fall into the trap of trying to be edgy," says Matt, consciously.

But despite playing the same night as Considine's band, the music of Little Lost David, aka Little Lost David, is at the opposite end of the musical spectrum.

Where Riding the Low play rocky indie, Little Lost David plays intricately-weaved, soul-bearing lyrics.

"Songs are deeply personal," says the classically-trained Roch, who signed to Sony Records on June 10, his birthday.

"Some songs are so personal that they are recorded but I could never play them live."

"We're recording with a string quartet and I fill out the other musical parts myself but live it's much rawer, and at times it does feel like I'm bearing my soul."

Riding the Low, Little Lost David and Green Man Says Go play at the Grapes, Trippet Lane this Saturday.
