MEDICINE, medical instruments and caring for the sick in Sheffield during the past century is the theme for activities at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet this August, featuring objects and instruments on loan from The Thackray Museum in Leeds and photographs from Sheffield Local Studies and Archive.
Medicine through the Ages is a series of summer holiday events featuring exhibits dating from 1880 up until 1950. Visitors are able to handle some of the objects, match the different instruments to their use (including pulling out teeth and cutting o
ff legs!) and view photographs that capture hospital care in Sheffield before and after the start of the NHS.

Judith Smith, Heritage Learning Consultant at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, said: "Learning about care for the sick in Sheffield has been fascinating and at times it has also raised an eyebrow or two. The activities during August have been designed to help children discover more about medicine and the human body and also learn a bit about the lives of children growing up around the Hamlet, for example next week they will be able to see the new toys available after the end of World War II."

Visitors can also enter a competition to win tickets to the reopening of Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet's sister museum Kelham Island Museum when it becomes fully operational again in the autumn after last year's floods.

Medicine through the Ages takes place every Tuesday and Wednesday during August from 10.30am-3.30 pm each week. A drama workshop is also taking place on August 19-20 running from 10.30am-noon. Entrance into Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet costs £3 for adults (£2 concessions), accompanied children are free of charge. All activities for children including the drama workshops are free.
