"I ONLY know one song," a bloke in the crowd confessed to his mate.
Boy was he out of place. Sheffield turned out in force to party with one of the hit bands of the summer festival season, ready to sing along to every one of the anthems from their debut album St Jude.
By the middle of the set, the audience had rea
lly let loose and even the back of the crowd was in a frenzy.
The Courteeners, who were one of the line-up at the Love Music Hate Racism event at Magna in Rotherham last month, have some brilliant songs written by frontman Liam Fray.
His stories of everyday Manchester life really hit a chord, in much the same way that Sheffield bands like the Arctics do.
The band are tight on stage and only the slightly muted sound lets them down.
This is only really overcome when Liam does two numbers solo on guitar, the normally punchy No You Didn't No You Don't and the love song Yesterday Today Tomorrow.
They cover all the favourites from St Jude – Not Nineteen Forever, What Took You So Long, Bide Your Time, Cavorting, Please Don't and more. Every one goes down a storm, deservedly.
We also got a preview of the new single That Kiss, which got a warm reception.
As he left the stage, Liam Fray shouted: "Thanks Sheffield, you are legend as always."
You too, mate, but give us an encore next time.
