FOR A SECRET gig tonight's surprise set in Glastonbury's Leftfield tent must be the worst-kept secret in the festival, as hundreds flock to the huge marquee to catch Reverend and the Makers.
A sea of bedraggled festival-goers wait at the front of the stage for Reverend and the Makers to appear – when they do, they are certainly made welcome.
Screams, extended bouts of clapping and requests emanate from the audience as the Mohican-hai
red John 'the Reverend' McClure saunters onstage.
Following the success of Friday night's performance at the festival the band's on a high – McClure's mesmerising stage presence holds the crowd, while keyboardist Laura Manuel springs about her instrument.
Each song is played with zest and vigour as the Reverend's electro funk formula rules the set.
Although tonight's set is short it's packed with danceable stompers, with clinchers including – unsurprisingly – the classic hits Open Your Window and He Said He Loved Me.
Even on a big stage with a raucous crowd, the Reverend's astute lyrics are still audible – cutting observations of tragic pregnancies, isolation and mundane life.
The crowd mouth the lyrics verbatim to the anthem-like number He Said He Loved Me: "She used to go out, she used to get dressed up/ and all the while she'd getting more fucked up."
McClure plays an encore but, as he starts to do another number, he is asked to end the set.
Glastonbury's tight schedules have little room for audience demands. But at least Reverend and the Makers leave the crowd wanting more.
