A CROWD gathers at the front as Screaming Mimi take the Harley stage.
It's a cult crowd – one man stands at the front and mouths almost every song as the band plays its Film Noir, dark-tinged pop.
But Screaming Mimi – from Sheffield – is a cult band. Tonight's set showcases the band's musical explorations from scre
echy, sombre numbers to light-hearted pop. Frontwoman Loretta dominates the stage clad in a bold dress accompanied by her mascot – a Moog theramin.
The band opens with the instrumental Plug It Up, it's a raunchy, sultry number with surfy guitar strums and wild screams from the theramin. It's a bold introduction to a set and entirely engaging. Who is Louise maintains the surfy aesthetic with frantic guitar and fiery drumming cut with crisp vocals. Loretta leaps about the stage until the song comes to a deliberately abrupt end.
Bumblebee enchants the crowd with its slow, eerie vocals and carnivalesque swirls. The song changes the pace of the set, presenting a darker, more sinister sound to Screaming Mimi.
But like Jekyll and Hyde – Screaming Mimi's dark and light alter-egos are both at play this evening. At one point Loretta joins the crowd and jumps around with a wand for almost an entire song. The band is transformed from brooding beast to dancing fairy in one song.
