BEING a 'theramin star' is definitely a niche market. And theramin star Beatrix Ward-Fernandez is definitely a niche artist within a very niche genre.
Weird, anti-melodic swirls and squeaking steel samples create ghost-like sonic spaces. Ward-Fernandez's latest release, Trio, marks the studio collaboration with Sheffield's experimental musicians Derek Shaw and percussionist Charlie Collins.

Frag
ments of brass spill over moody theramin parts and sporadic, jazz-like drumming intercept the sonic madness.

The album does not conform to the conventional album format with ten or 11 songs. Rather, it's a long collage of brass, theramin, drums and eerie samples blending into one another.

Trio is totally distinctive but requires a very open mind to appreciate it.
