White Denim can work it out

WHITE DENIM are packed into a car when the Telegraph speaks to them. The group are travelling to Norway as part of a manic tour.
It's a wonder WD keep abreast of their rapidly-growing musical career – a mere two years old, they are barely out of the rock and roll cradle.
But despite this, White Denim's sound is mature, knowing and sophisticated. Musical elements are emphasised so as to compliment their instrumental counterparts, not merely add decoration. There are no superfluous sounds.
White Denim's debut album, Workout Holiday, is a testament to vintage-sounding production. Throughout the entire album is a veneer of Kinksy old school garage. Guitars are furious, drums are tribal – White Denim tick all the boxes of a raucous rock and roll act.
James Petralli (guitars/vocals) says that the band's sound isn't the result of any preconceived idea: "Whatever we do happens very naturally – when we started we didn't have a big idea of what we wanted to sound like. We let things come organically."
And it does, songs flow seamlessly from track to track. Lyrically, White Denim are equally elusive: "I guess half the lyrics are just standard rock and roll lyrics and the other half is kind of social commentary, personal stuff about communication and experience."
But while the band shakes off Workout Holiday as a chance occurrence, the title reveals much more. Workout Holiday refers to the weekends, holidays and evenings making the record alongside full-time jobs (including a truck driver, museum worker and businessman).
White Denim's riffy raucous Workout Holiday embodies all of rock and roll's sonic excesses – punky attitude, garage grooves and psychedelic swirls. What else could you want?
They play at Plug on Wenesday July 2.
