The inaugural Ride for Eric – when more than 370 cyclists remembered Eric Codling, the Millhouses man who was killed by a reckless driver on Whirlowdale Road a Sunday morning ride – raised over £10,000.

The money will be used for a new bereavement service at Cavendish Cancer Care in Broomhall, which supported the 55-year-old’s family. Eamonn Hunt, of the organising committee, said: “When we first thought of doing a cycle ride in Eric’s honour we never dreamt we would see so many people turning out on the day and raising so much money.”

The ride, for all abilities, with circular routes from Abbeydale Sports Centre, will be repeated on July 12 next year.
