Have your say

Sheffielders look back fondly on the city centre Christmas lights of previous years and say how much better they were back in the day.

Especially this year, when the city council scaled back the switch-on ceremony amid these days of austerity which do not stand comparison with the sight of The Moor all ablaze and atwinkle. This was 1962, soon after Sheffield introduced Christmas illuminations for the first time in December 1961 -and by the Seventies, it was claimed the city had the best lights outside London, certainly eclipsing Leeds and stoking up local rivalry .

Long since pedestrianised, The Moor, of course, has changed - though remarkably not British Home Stores which has survived as BHS to witness the revival of the shopping street with the opening this week of the new markets complex.
