ARCHBISHOP Desmond Tutu visited Sheffield for the first time to launch a gap year programme which provides opportunities for young people to travel and help others.
The Archbiship came to the city in his role as president of the Church Army which runs the programme called Xplore, sending young people aged 18 to 25 all over the world on a "Christian mission".

Speaking at the launch of the programme at the Church Army's Wilson Carlile Centre on Cavendish Street in the city centre, the Archbishop said: "I love young people, after all they are what it's all about.

"It's true that some young people do get on the wrong path but it's important to remember that a lot do not and that we're talking about a minority.

"In fact I think it's amazing that with all the pressures on young people today, we're not seeing more of them go wrong."

The Xplore programme offers youngsters 14 weeks of training at the Wilson Carlile Centre before they are sent on a six-month placement. Youngsters on the programme can go to Kenya, the USA, Australia, Canada, Barbados, Jamaica, New Zealand or the UK.

The focus is on working with people in communities where traditional church has failed.

The first lot of placements are due to start in January 2010.

The Archbishop said: "This is a fantastic programme that latches on to the enthusiasm and excitement associated with young people.

"We're sending them off into the world and what we're seeing is that they're coming back changed. They're doing exciting things and helping to change the world."

Speaking about his visit to Sheffield, Archbishop Tutu added: "This is my first time in Sheffield and I can see that I've been missing out."

The Archbishop also had a message for today's youth. "Whatever you do, don't allow yourselves to become infected with the cynicism of 'oldies' like us," he said with a laugh.

"Believe you can change the world and you will – God is depending on you."
