TWO campaigners from Sheffield who fought to save the Tinsley cooling towers are leaving, frustrated at what they believe is the city's lack of progress.
"We don't want to keep banging our heads against a brick wall," said Tom James.
"We love Sheffield but we're off to find cities where things actually happen instead of people just talking about it all the time."
Tom and Tom Keeley, who run the
community Fanzine Go! Sheffield, campaigned for the towers to be restored at works of art.
They announced that they were leaving Sheffield at a public meeting to discuss the towers, which some people believe are an iconic symbol of the city and represent a point of arrival.
Tom James added: "Icons are iconic because people take something to their heart.
"Everybody wants their own Angel of the North but it only works because the people of Newcastle have taken it into their hearts and made it their own."
A meeting organised by Sheffield Civic Trust debated options for a replacement for the landmark, in the wake of owners E.On's offer of £500,000 for a piece of public art elsewhere in the city.
The company plans to redevelop the site of the Tinsley towers.
A shortlist of ideas will be produced for public consultation.
