A SOUTH Yorkshire doctor is facing the General Medical Council for allegations of misconduct.
Dr Julian Leon Ostrowski worked for Barnsley Hospital as a consultant histopathologist, an expert in the examination of tissues, from 1999 to 2006.

From 2001 to 2005 he was clinical director for the Pathology Department.

But it is alleged he failed to report specimens in writing and in a timely fashion, and between 2004 and 2006 allowed a backlog of unreported specimens to build up.

It is claimed his alleged actions were "not in the best interest of patient care", "inadequate", and "below the standard to be expected of a medical practitioner".

It is also alleged that in August 2006, before leaving the employment of the hospital trust, Dr Ostrowski promised he would clear his backlog of unreported specimens, and said no patients had been put at risk.

A panel will decide whether Dr Ostrowski is guilty of misconduct and, if so, whether his fitness to practise medicine has been impaired.

Dr Ostrowski, who graduated from The University of Sheffield in 1988, is facing a panel in Manchester.

The case is expected to last into June.
