WATER thundering over the Derwent Dam made a dramatic spectacle for visitors to the Peak Park's Fairholmes Visitor Centre this week.
Ten days of persistent rain have sent water cascading over the walls of the reservoir – which was built in 1916 to hold around 2,000 million gallons, supplying four major cities in the region.
Overflows are common in the winter but unusual for lon
ger than a day or two at this time of year.
Peak Park Ranger Paul Wetton said: "Generally speaking the rain dries out and the water level drops but its been quite dramatic over the last week or so.
"The visitors who come are often surprised – and the combination of cascading water and a bright sunny afternoon is the best of both worlds."
