PLANS to replace the Gap fashion store in Sheffield city centre with a 'flagship' branch of Barclays Bank were approved this week by councillors.
They gave the go-ahead on Monday after being told that the shop, at the corner of Barkers Pool and Pinstone Street, suffered from an "awkward" layout over three floors and from being away from the prime shopping pitch of Fargate.

The council was nervous about losing a shop in a high-profile location but equally anxious to avoid the building standing empty and agreed that the bank would offer a high-quality replacement.

It believes that major fashion chains such as Gap will eventually be attracted to Sevenstone, the £600m New Retail Quarter due to be built between Pinstone Street, Barkers Pool and Moorhead.

The application for a change of use of the Gap store was submitted by Barclays Bank and the owners of the building, who are Scottish Widows Investment Partnership.

Barclays are looking to consolidate three existing branches in High Street, Commercial Street and Pinstone Street to create its main branch in Sheffield.
