The figures were published by the Healthcare Commission, which checked on survival rates for heart surgery in the UK.

They are based at the Chesterman Centre at the Northern General, a purpose-built unit whose surgeons who saw 1,064 adult heart surgery patients for the year ending March 2007.

Dr Stephen Campbell, clinical director for Cardiothoracic Services at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: "We are pleased that our survival rates published by the Healthcare Commission reflect the outstanding team we have here in the cardiac unit at the Northern General Hospital.

"Our rates remain consistently high which is what our patients deserve."
