HOME secretary Alan Johnson has agreed to set up a ministerial committee to manage the release of all documents relating to the Hillsborough disaster.
Relatives of the 96 victims killed due to a crowd crush at Sheffield Wednesday's football stadium in 1989 have been calling for the release of all the files held by organisations including South Yorkshire Police and the Sheffield hospitals where bodi
es were taken.

They believe there could be around 20,000 unpublished documents.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "The Chief Constable, Meredydd Hughes, wrote several months ago to the Home Secretary proposing the release of the Hillsborough Disaster archives and then wrote with an outline plan for this to happen.

"This has been followed up by a meeting with senior officials and it is proposed that the chief constable will form part of the co-ordinating arrangements at a national level.

"The Home Secretary has no authority in respect of the Hillsborough documents held by South Yorkshire Police, but it is essential that the release of these documents is dovetailed with the release of those held by various departments in central government.

"The chief constable is bringing together all local agencies to establish what information is held and how it can be released and we look forward to the necessary resources being made available to ensure this process takes place sensitively."
