Owls fans a credit to the city – police
SHEFFIELD Wednesday fans who packed out Hillsborough at their vital last game of the season have been praised by police for their behaviour.
More than 36,000 fans cheered the Owls to their 4-1 victory over Norwich. Police said only one arrest was made for public disorder, before the game, with a further seven ejected from the stadium for breaching segregation rules by buying tickets in the Norwich end.
Match commander Supt Martin Hemingway said: "The atmosphere at this match was everything that a genuine football fan could have wanted – 100 per cent positive throughout. Fans left plenty of time to get to the game and were patient and well-behaved in getting a capacity crowd into the stadium in safety.
"Despite the joy at the victory, fans stayed off the pitch at the end and ensured that the great result was not marred in any way. All in all the fans at the stadium were a credit to their club and the city.
"Local publicans played their part in a great celebration by ensuring that things did not get out of hand. Before the game they all stood together and turned their pumps off early to ensure fans left in good time for the match. They played a tremendous part in the overall safety operation."
